Thinking about starting therapy..?

Something I often notice in my work is just how hard that very first step can be — reaching out and starting counselling. It’s something I’ve been reflecting on recently.
For many people, there’s a sense of hesitation. Sometimes it’s the old stigma that still lingers in our culture — the idea that asking for help means weakness, when in truth it takes such courage. Other times, it’s the unknown that feels daunting: What will it be like? Will I know what to say? These questions are so human, and I hear them often.
There are also the practical barriers — the busy schedules, the financial worries, the juggling of priorities. And then there’s something quieter but just as real: the feeling that maybe my struggles “aren’t bad enough” to deserve support. I wish I could reassure everyone who feels that way that counselling isn’t reserved for moments of crisis. It’s a space for anyone who wants to understand themselves more deeply or simply find a gentler way of moving through life.
I suppose what I’m saying is that if you’ve thought about counselling but feel a little stuck on the threshold, you’re not alone in that. Even naming the barriers is a step towards moving through them. And once you do take that step, you may find the space welcoming you just as you are — no expectations, no judgements, just room to breathe and explore.
So what might counselling actually look like? At its heart, it’s about building a relationship of trust. It can take time to get to know each other, and for you to feel comfortable bringing to sessions what feels important for you - and that's OK. I always try to listen with care, to try and understand the meaning behind your words. Sometimes I might gently draw attention to patterns or themes that may be shaping your experience. I will invite you to be curious and compassionate, which can open the door to exploring new perspectives and possibilities. My hope is that counselling feels like a safe and supportive space where you can come to understand yourself more fully and begin to discover what feels right for you.
